Absolutely exciting !

Despite the fact that there are rumors whether the story is real or partial fiction, this is an incredible account of a SAS patrol during operation Desert Storm. I've made a lot of cross checking other books regarding the details of his story, even the books of authors which claim that McNab's story is fiction. And after that I find his account real.

Nichts für schwache Gemüter.

Andy McNab, einst Sergeant bei der Britischen Spezialeinheit SAS, erzählt in diesem Buch, wie er und sieben andere im vorigen Irakkrieg bei einer Mission hinter der Front in Schwierigkeiten und in weiterer Folge teilweise in Gefangenschaft geraten sind. Was er dort erlebt hat ist nicht schön, oh nein. Daher, Finger weg von diesem Buch, wenn man als Leser nicht eine Menge ertragen kann.

Das Authentizität der Geschichte wird mittlerweile in Zweifel gezogen, aber ich denke, es spielt keine große Rolle für den Durchschnittsleser. McNab hat es in der einen oder anderen Form erlebt, und genau das macht das Buch so heftig - aber auch so gut. Das ist kein Abenteuerroman, und Helden gibt es hier schon gar nicht. Mag sein, daß man diese Art von Geschichten in fiktiver Gestalt von nun an mit anderen Augen sieht.

Fiction.

I have read books that were written worse. So I give this book in regard to McNabs ghost writer or Co-author 1 star. But since it claims to be a memoir, it deserves none more in my opinion

The author uses a modest tone in telling the story of Patrol Bravo two Zero. I guess that is supposed to give the story more credibility. Sorry, I still dont find it convincing at all. A patrol going into the desert (!) on foot (!) to search and destroy Scuds, again on foot. So far so good, but when you read about the story of the 8 men being attacked by 2 Apc's accompanied with some truckloads of inf in the open flat ground, with only their Rucksacks as cover -- and they chase the Iraqis off, it just smells like Hollywood fiction. I strongly recommend reading Michael Ashers book , that investigates the real story behind the patrol and gives some facts that make McNabs version crumble. Others have outspoken their doubt of McNabs version, escpecially the Sergeant Major of the Regiment at that time. The book gives some insight into SAS operating routine, if you cut the crap of killing 250 Iraqi soldiers and dusting some Armor. In the end its a good example of a memoir that went fiction so that a veteran can make some good cash after retirement. Cant blame the author , but the public that so readily swallows these stories , in its desire for heroes that overcome all odds.

The uncovered truth of a real war.

After I`ve finished this book, I just sat in my living room, and stared out of the window. The story of Andy McNab and his men were comprimised and being captured is truly a incredible story. At some moments I felt my eyes filling in with tears for the hard time they've had beeing POW. It was like laughing together and crying together. Every one of those men are real brave heroes, and this is their story. Even after a hard day's work of twelve hours or more (working as a paramedic) I couldn't fall asleep without reading their dramatically story. This is one of the best books I've bought my hole life! Get this one too, and you won't regret it! That's for sure! And in the one or other way it will change your life...

Realistic and fascinating.

The mayor difference between Andy's books and those of auhtors like Tom Clancy is that he has seen it all. He knows how it feels to be cold and wet and hungry (and he hates it). Also his style is some what crude, that only improves the feeling of authenticy he creates.

So, if you want to know what it takes to become a member of the SAS, or qhy you don't want to become one, a must read.
