Pure fiction, but not bad.1. The Story
Beginning with his youth, the author describes in the first two chapters his way in the royal army and the SAS:
He wrote a report of his experiences in the basic army training followed by his "SAS training" (see: 2. The Author).
In the most part of the book he tell's an interesting and suspenseful story of an SAS Soldier supporting the afghan
Mujahideen in their war against the soviet invaders, in Afghanistan in 1980 to 81.
His first mission was an recon mission: he spent three weeks in Afghanistan, travels around various Mujahideen camps
and collecting pieces of soviet military equipment. Later he describes how he takes part in the war, killing soviet soldiers,
and buying weapons on international markets in support of Mujahideen fight.
2. The Author
Do you think the author's name is Tom Carew ?
Do you think the author ever served IN the SAS ?
Wrong.
The author's real name is Philip Anthony Sessarego, and he never served in the SAS.
He was a member Royal Artillery and tried to join the SAS in 1973 but failed twice.
Quote of BBC News:
"
He was allowed to stay on as a non-member in what was called Demonstration Troop -
ordinary soldiers who did jobs for the SAS like play the enemy on exercises.
"
I think the Mr. Sessarego is a liar.
3. The Result
Ok.
The story is not true, its pure fiction.
If i'd known this earlier, i'd never bought the book.
But you take the book as a novel or a thriller, it's not bad.
The language is a little bit x x x, but it's easy to read and really captivating.
If you look for a book about the first Afghanistan War (1979 - 89), don't by it ("The Bear went over the Mountain"
(not the book for children) or "War in Afghanistan" are better).
If you look for a novel, it's ok.
