eye opener.

This book is probably only of any interest to you if you read Andy McNab's "Bravo two Zero" tale or "The one that got away" by chris ryan , since the authot tried to investigate the truth behind these two war memoirs.

I have only read McNabs book myself. Upon reading that title it occured to me that while the tone of the narrator was pretty modest, some of the stories were a bit off the edge. Another fishy book of war fiction that claims to be a true memoir ? Probably very much so.

Michael Asher, former SAS member himself, describes his interesting research into the truth behind the two memoirs, 10 years after the SAS patrol happened. He goes back to Iraq and finds some eyewitnesses. Most convincing to me was his analysis of the claimed marching distances as pretty much impossible. The eyewitness report combined with these hard facts make the book a refreshing eye opener and will allow you to be more critical when dealing with "war memoirs" in the future. All Vets have the tendency to glorify their deeds to some degree, but McNab cleary seems to have blown up a totally failed patrol into a hollywood script to make some cash after retirement. Asher does a good job at letting the hot air out of these two accounts , while still showing respect for the real ordeal and story that is behind the hollywood version. The book also gives some interesting insights on iraqi side in the gulf war. The only criticism that I have about Ashers book is , that his book should have included more input from other members of teh regiment ( I guess that wasnt possible) and his tendency to portray Beduins as the better people. I dont know if he is right about the life style of Bedouins, and although I tend to believe his judgement it doesnt do his book good to lean so heavily on the morale of his eyewitnesses , without being able to crosscheck from british sources. It seems that other members of the patrol were fighting for the right to publish a different version of the patrol's story under the name "bravo two zero". This legal action might have had a negative impact on Ashers chances to get interviews.
Anyway .. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested into war memoirs as a source of history and not as a form of "war fiction". It will help you to look for flaws in these acounts in the future.
